Harsh reality

15 Apr

I missed American Teen at the Atlanta Film Festival but I can always count on MTV to tell me what the kids are up to these days. However, with approximately 3,000,000 reality shows and one-hour documentary specials on TV these days, why does Atlanta always get shunned? Case in point: The Paper, a show that follows a high school newspaper and a few students’ battle to become its editor-in-chief. Why was some anonymous Florida high school chosen over Grady High School’s famous journalism program? Because Grady is legit and didn’t even apply to be on the show? WHATEVER. According to Miss Darrow, Grady is The Best High School Ever (ew, does that even exist?), so I know their students would have known better than to use Microsoft Word Art when applying for the most important job in the world:

Anyway, Atlanta did get BET’s College Hill to make up for being shunned by The Real World location scouts season after season. Oh, and Being Bobby Brown.

The perfect woman in every way

11 Apr

With the exception of The Hills, True Life is the best show on MTV. Recently they aired “I’m a Southern Belle” and it was SO GOOD. MTV followed two girls at Ole Miss and one girl who grew up on a cotton plantation in Tennessee (and whose boyfriend talks exactly like every guy at UGA) as they obsess over being perfect and getting married (or not).

My favorite was pageant queen Raini, who, despite being the youngest girl profiled on the episode (at 18 years old), dresses and grooms like an old church lady. Check out some of her dazzling fashions:

Chateau Elan on YouTube

26 Feb

I realize that the humor here is sort of along the lines of America’s Funniest Home Videos, but whatever.

I’m most impressed by two things:

1. The sincere concern of the newscasters once they cut away from the Chateau Elan footage (which by the way takes forever and leaves plenty of time to listen to the uncomfortable and bizarre noises that the hurt woman is making).

2. The reaction of YouTube viewers. I mean honestly, the response is so overwhelming that there are several related videos, including an animated version. Interestingly, the animated version has over 180,000 views, while the version of the actual footage that I found has under 90,000. However, taking the cake is easily the music video version of the footage (seen below). It has over 670,00 views. God, I love YouTube. And Atlanta newscasters.

Discover the Tiger

Rumor has it “nightmare online dater”/”worst person in the world”/Buckhead resident John Fitzgerald Page will be in an upcoming episode of Dr. Phil about “men with out-of-control egos.” This sounds horrifying. Think about it: Dr. Phil and John Fitzgerald Page, together. Uh, didn’t the Senate just pass a bill to make this kind of thing even more illegal?

If you have a loved one who should share some of Page’s infamy, the show is still seeking more men with unbelievable egos for this episode, so nominate away.

Until that episode airs and shatters your frail faith in human decency, enjoy this Tiger Beer commercial starring JFP and obviously filmed in everyone’s favorite store, Green’s.

Atlanta can cook!

6 Feb

I love food television. Not Food Network specifically, just television about food: Top Chef, No Reservations, Barefoot Contessa (although that one is a love-hate relationship). I can zone out in front of the television watching food porn for hours at a time. This season I will be able to have a little bit more than time and appetite invested because Atlanta is all over the the screens in foodie world. I know that the news about the two Atlanta chef’s on this season of Top Chef is old news, but it turns out now that Rathbun’s head chef will be competing on Food Network’s Iron Chef. Atlanta’s Top Chef contestants!

EDIT: Blame it on the Sudafed I took yesterday, but I made a bit of an error in fact. The Atlanta chef that will be appearing on Food Network’s Iron Chef is Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s. The show will air Febraury 24th at 9pm.

How do you say Decatur? How do you say Dacula?

In the early 80s, a public access show called The American Music Show aired in Atlanta. Its most famous alumni are RuPal and Benjamin Smoke, but it was hosted by the extraordinary DeAundra Peek and featured many other weird and wonderful characters (most in drag) on this truly bizarre bit of underground programming. MisterRichardson has archived many of the finest clips from The American Music Show as well as other Atlanta public access shows from TAMS friends on YouTube; you can also watch some great stuff on the Funtone website.

The American Music Show was the longest running public access show in America. Eat it, TV Party! I tried not to get carried away and post every video, so behold a few of my favorites. But do spend some time digging around Mr. Richardson’s and Funtone’s extensive collections on your own.
