It’s almost summer camp time, which means for adults, watching movies about summer camp with deep nostalgia and sentimentality and pretending that summer camp was like that for us. One of the most famous of the camp genre was 1980′s Little Darlings, which still languishes in VHS-only purgatory. However, the summer is a great time to catch it edited for television audiences, whether on TBS, TNT, or one of those other channels.
Little Darlings was filmed at Hard Labor Creek State Park (terrible name, wonderful place) in Rutledge, Georgia but the pre- and post-camp scenes were shot in Atlanta. The generic poor person apartments where Angel (Kristy McNichols) lives have likely been demolished…

…but we know Ferris (Tatum O’Neal) is rich because she lives at the Swan House and shows up for camp in a smart linen suit and a Rolls-Royce.

There are a couple of tiny glimpses of Downtown from where the lil’ darlings are dropped off to be bused to camp, in the parking lot of the Atlanta Journal building.
And one moving scene at the very end between the best friends from opposite sides of the tracks, in front of the old Omni.
There’s not a lot of analysis or insight in this post, but some avid readers have brought it to the attention of Pecanne Log’s customer service division that we have been “slacking” on posts lately, so this is to prevent our withering readership base from giving up on us for at least another week or so.

Actually that looks very much like the Emory Woods apartments near Emory campus (N. Decatur & Clairmont). I and both of my siblings lived there at various times and in various units from the early 80s to the early 90s. A great place to live, in truth. Amazingly, the complex is still there, and still rental. I had forgotten (if I ever knew it in the first place) that LD was filmed in GA!
Here’s another shot of the apartments. I know the ones you’re talking about – the skinny windows are similar but I don’t know if I’m quite convinced!
