Baubles, bangles, and beads

17 Jan

My! My! My! opened this past fall in a Peachtree Street storefront that has never seen a successful business as long as I’ve been walking by there. Nothing’s ever made for long there because they never sold anything interesting. But when I first saw the dramatically sequined mannequins in the window dressed to attend the 1992 Daytime Emmys I was so pleasantly surprised – most Midtown clothing stores opening these days seem to just sell $300 men’s Oxford shirts with French words screenprinted on the sleeves. I was intimidated to enter for a couple of months but finally made it in to dig up something flashy to wear for New Year’s Eve.

Daily Candy has the full My! My! My! story here, but basically all you need to know is that John, the owner, is friends with someone who does costumes for soap operas in L.A. and gets some unbelievable pieces. There’s also a TON of jewelry and other accessories that are a little more acceptable for the days you have to go sensible business casual instead of Suzanne Sugarbaker at the Governor’s ball.

Before you go in there, know that EVERY price is negotiable, and everyone who works there is super nice and really wants you to go home with whatever you love. I should have taken full advantage of this and now I will forever be known as the girl who didn’t buy this dress:It was gone the last time I was there – fortunately, a teenager visiting from Tennessee got it so I’ll never have to see someone else in it. I also tried on this navy velvet capelet trimmed with ostrich feathers – it is still there and I’m okay with one of you getting it instead, which is why I can finally tell the world that this store exists:

The jewelry is best part – it makes for an easier impulse purchase due to size. Unlike vintage stores around town, My! My! My!’s jewelry isn’t just rescued all rusty and broken from a garage sale or thrift store and then marked up 900%. It’s in really nice, sparkly condition. Every time I’m in the store I just want to run around singing “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads.”  Oh, and the brooch selection is excellent – Kasim Reed really has no excuse for not embracing broochery as the previous mayor did with such an astounding collection of art deco lapel embellishments just a couple of miles from City Hall.

I hope this boutique stays open forever and really spruces up all the AT&T workers’ Casual Fridays. Oh, and I am looking for a pair of earrings identical to the ones Whitney wears in “The Greatest Love of All” music video so if you are in My! My! My! and see any like this, do not purchase them and contact me immediately.
