24 MarNext time I’ll show you the Muse’s department store ads scattered throughout the GQ with fun facts about “Fabulous Atlanta” that sound like a text from a lackluster chamber of commerce brochure. Example: “Over 60 privately chartered buses leave the city each week.” And then the weird description of coming of age in Atlanta:
Growing up in Atlanta is probably a lot like growing up anywhere. Only better. It’s going to concerts and learning to paint and climbing trees and playing ball and going swimming. It’s having wonderful schools to go to and good friends to be happy with. It’s learning and laughing and having fun. It’s playing in the sunshine, with trees, birds and squirrels everywhere.
Thank you, Mad Men.
Again, just click on the photo for the larger version. I wish I didn’t have to remind you people of this every single time. Recognize anything?

At the time of this spread, the Atlanta Airport was pathetically only fourth in the nation in terms of passengers.

The caption for the following photo: “King-sized paisleys go courting in Atlanta and find that Southern hospitality is no myth.” The lady’s blouse is from Muse’s.

If anyone picks Paul Blart, you are banned forever
24 MarI’m not sure if this is supposed to be open to everyone, but whatever, now it is: you can vote for what you think Georgia Tech’s summer film series Flicks on 5th should screen! We hope Pecanne Log readers are as classy as we like to think they are and all write in Brideshead Revisited.
The scheduled dates for Flicks on 5th are June 10, 17, 24, July 8, 15, and 22. Now that Screen on the Green is at Centennial Olympic Park possibly forever, Flicks on 5th is your only Midtown option for outdoor summer films.

But first, it’s almost Atlanta Film Festival time! This year they are featuring some incredible films from Mexico; the closing night is Rudo y Cursi (a marvelous quiĆ©n es quien of Mexican cinema). As usual, I am desperate to make it to all of the AFF films and events but will be lucky if I make it to one movie.
But first, the cult-celluloid-inspired We Are Going To Eat You opens at Mint Gallery Saturday, April 4. The show is curated by Turner Classic Movies’ Eric Weber and Millie De Chirico. Oooh, this looks so good. There are over 20 artists involved (see Jon Walters’ flyer on the right).
But first, Whitespace Gallery hosts At Loose Ends, three evenings of underground film curated by Brad Lapin. Friday nights are free screenings of documentaries that follow the art and lives of unconventional filmmakers Guy Maddin (April 3), Jack Smith (March 27), Nick Zedd, and Richard Kern (April 27).
Teenage pizza party all over again!
19 Mar
My favorite pizza place in Atlanta, Cameli’s, is turning 13 and hosting a big birthday blow-out on Saturday. For $8, you get “free” pizza, Atlas Sound, Abby Go Go, and Facehugger. I don’t know how beer factors into that cover, except that it will be there.
The party is downstairs from Cameli’s, meaning Underground Murder Kroger will definintely be more hopping than Underground Atlanta.
The city too busy to change
17 Mar
Some selected quotes from that 1967 GQ I’m so happy about:
Atlanta is something of a liberal oasis on a desert of reaction.
If you want to sell something to Atlanta, just convince a handful of the right people that Atlanta can’t be a Big League City without it, and the proposition is as good as taken.
Civic-minded Atlantans are sensitive about their city’s progressive reputation. It’s not a chip that they carry on their shoulders, but an earnest sweat on their brows. Criticize Atlanta for what it lacks and the response is less likely to be “Whaddaya mean?” than “Okay, we’ll get one.”
But Atlantans’ blood does run cold at the thought that a gold star already earned may tarnish: there is a tendency to measure any event by its potential effect on Atlanta’s “image”.
From “Atlanta! Aflame again” by Bruce Galphin in April 1967.

These magazine pages are huge so I haven’t figured out how I’m going to scan them all. For now, here are a few. Click any photos for the larger image. (more…)
Luck o’ the gingers
16 MarI wasn’t able to submit to Access Atlanta a photo of Thomas because of the extensive registration process required on AJC. So here you go, readers. Happy Thomas “St.” Patrick Wheatley’s Day.

I did notice that another Loafer made it to the AJC gallery of redheads, but even if David Lee Simmons gave AJC all of his personal information, he still couldn’t slip his subtle plug for his employer past the censors.

Hmmmmm. When will the AJC admit that Creative Loafing exists?
Aaaah, Midtown

Shop talk
13 MarFirst of all, check out these cute letterpress neighborhood postcards from Katie Kaiser that are available at Urban Cottage for $3 each. (Also on Etsy.)

I feel bad about judging Urban Cottage by its old website right before it opened its Vaggie-Hi location. I was mad about my beloved Atlanta Book Exchange moving to a new county (a quarter of a mile away). Urban Cottage is lovely and they are also well stocked in Alternative Apparel‘s best and most classic pieces in black and white only (and sometimes gray).
And aren’t you dying to know what I got at Highland Row Antiques last weekend? (more…)
Thomas Wheatley is famous
13 Mar
We haven’t been too hot on the Wheatdawg trail lately, but that ends TODAY when Thomas made national news just for doing his job, which is 1) playing on Facebook all day and 2) identifying when Georgia politicians are being racist. Read about his triumphs on celebrity news blog Wonkette or directly on the Fresh Loaf post he wrote on the matter, and celebrate by submitting his photo to Access Atlanta, which is collecting photos of redheads right now.

A window to the soul
2 MarNow for your weekly dose of what’s going on in Downtown Atlanta. This time from the more genteel neighborhood of Fairlie-Poplar, we have the latest window display of the Christian Science Reading Room. But first, some history: the windows of the Christian Science Reading Room are always immaculately decorated in construction paper with a little display pertinent to the current events of the time. For example, in late October, we observed this:

Reminding us to vote…with prayer. (Sorry, it was dark and that was the best I could do!)

So what’s the big news item of early ’09?

MASSIVE, TERRIFYING UNEMPLOYMENT!

Bill Murray is/was loose in Atlanta
1 Mar
According to a reliable source, Bill Murray was buying drinks for ladies at Loca Luna this weekend. He is filming a movie here? Or in Tennessee? We are still buzzing from the snow day and can’t be bothered with facts about celebrity sightings. So here’s a picture of Bill Murray, and snow.
