The Starbucks (next to Ben & Jerry’s) on N. Highland closed rather abruptly – one day it was there, the next day it was gutted and there was just an outline where the letters once hung.
At the same time I first noticed the freshly-blank facade, a suited man with long gelled curls I haven’t seen this side of Weird Al ducked across the street to pop into the Starbucks, only to see his parking meter fee was in vain. He looked baffled, and a little devastated. I would have recommended another coffee shop, but he looked like he just needed some time alone.
Later I spotted a coming soon sign for Krispy Kreme. The last thing I need is convenient access to late-night cruellers, but I guess it’s a good thing.
It also appears a Waffle House is going in above Underground Atlanta on Upper Alabama Street. This building has some beautiful details that will contrast nicely with runny patty melts.

It is unfortunate that such primo space in Va-Hi has to be occupied by yet another chain. But, given that there had been a chain there already, I suppose it’s not a loss. And now maybe more people will be motivated to head down the street to Aurora for their java fixes!
I work down the street from that new Waffle House location and I am fearing being able to get my “scattered covered and smothered” on so close.
That’s kinda cool about the WH on Upper Alabama. It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that a WH is a bit of a step up compared to other street-level restaurants in that area. There are some very cool spots on Broad St, though, like Rosa’s and Rueben’s.
