... we know chivalry is dead... or not always in the traditional forms especially within the black community. African American men used to find excitement in obtaining their own forms of transportation to impress ladies and signal their ability to support a woman.
With the compounded issues facing the black community, Black women are commonly the providers or even the steady part of a relationship supporting men. Women, who were not jaded by the criticism that beset them by society and even family for their decisions, struggle to support the unemployed, ex-offenders, or at best blue collar workers while still meeting the unbalanced standards of fresh hair-dos and manicures.
It is nothing new for this perpetual gender role imbalance within the black community to be met with resentment. In the early 20th Century, Black women were the bread winners because white homes still needed washer women and house keepers especially in Atlanta, Ga. At the same time, Black men were steadily barred from all sorts of employment positions. This created an internal rift for the black family which is just magnified by uneducated young people of today. Educated being defined by knowledge of their past and of self.
As for hip-hop's role in this perspective, generalizations are never fair nor commonly applicable. Webbie's great new single INDEPENDENT (and video- might I say) appreciates the aspirations and hard work of black women often pushed to the background. This type of content is COMMERCIALLY limited to the neo-soul genre, but Hip-hop is too diverse to be stifled by corporate america. Since more black women are earning college degrees than black men, "corporate america" would focus on this threat by promoting internal hatred aimed at demeaning women within the Black community.
It is OK to love a man who is not making more than you, or does not have material possessions- as long as he is not using you for your material gains. If he provides the emotional and mental support that you need in a relationship, then he can ride the marta bus, or you can pick him up.
However, it is NOT OK to accept this double standard or think it is dismissible for men to reject a woman because of her material inadequacies.
