Where my boys at

26 Jan

Okay, it’s really embarrassing to write this post and I know I’m going to regret it, but I’m doing it anyway as a public service and because we are a ladyblog.

Full disclosure: I have a boyfriend and we have been together for about 24 years. But I am always scoping out where boys congregate because I have some friends on the fence in terms of moving to Atlanta, and despite job opportunities, affordability, nightlife, music/art scene, food, accessibility, and all the other good reasons one might have for moving to a city, really nothing is appealing and persuasive in the same way as realizing there are a lot of cute guys to choose from. (Maybe I am only saying this because Conde Nast sends me Glamour ever since Jane folded and I am brainwashed.)

So I polled a few girls to find out where the boys (and girls) at, and it was humiliating because I totally sounded like Carrie Bradshaw as much as I tried not to. A few girls were like, “UH, HELLO CHRISTA, I HAVE A BOYFRIEND!!!!” and then a couple of days later would email me a tip, so I know they were thinking about it. (You know who you are.)

Mine:

  • Georgia Tech College of Architecture. I know, I know, you’re like, “Georgia Tech? Surely you jest.” No, I don’t. In addition to being good looking and really busy so you still get a lot of time to yourself, this is a smart, moderately wholesome, monogamous bunch you can totally take home to mom, so don’t expect any trouble from them and be sure you give them the same respect. However, due to their abilities to commit, many of them are already tied down (like mine, so back off).
  • Joe’s on Juniper: Gay and very affectionate waitstaff.
  • Aurora Coffee: The L5P location is best, especially if there’s something going on at Criminal and you get the spillover.
  • Openings at tiny art galleries
  • Local film events (e.g. Atlanta Underground Film Festival)

Now I can never have anything to do with any of these places ever again.

And others’:

  1. I think the boys who work at Criminal Records are cute. Duh.
  2. Boys who work at Brick Store are super super dreamy.
  3. Cute lesbians are always available at Rollergirls events, both on the teams and in the crowd.
  4. Cute dad-types can always be found at Candler Park, especially during the day on weekdays.

If you like the bearded, gruffer looking sort, The EARL is great. Mary’s on Karoke night pulls some good (straight) ones out of the woodwork. East Lake YMCA is awesome! I have probably kept my gym membership there largely in part because of the plethora of attractive young men that abound there.

Debbie Downer says:

I moved to Atlanta three years ago and unfortunately I have yet to find where the cute boys hang out. I seriously doubt there are more than say, a dozen attractive men in this city and they certainly don’t congregate together in one place. There was a magical month back in ‘05 where all the boys who worked at Fellini’s in Candler Park were super cute. And super young…But then one day they disappeared and were replaced by older Hispanic men. Of course I’m just referring to straight men. This city is chock full o’ hot gay dudes. Meeting men in Atlanta is like going to an ice cream shop when you are lactose intolerant. There’s so much to look at and you want to eat it but you CAN’T! You can’t have them because they don’t like you! They don’t like women!! So if you want to find the dreamiest boys in the ATL, just stop by Piedmont Park during PrideFest, or maybe Jungle on Friday night. But don’t think you’ll be taking anyone home with you, it’s window shopping only honey.

And where not to go:

There’s not anything remarkable about guys in the various schools of Emory I hang out in.

Photos are for illustrative purposes only; none of the men in pictures above actually live in Atlanta. And if you can name all the guys in the first picture, then let’s go drinking sometime.

For you non-Atlantans, the saying about GA Tech goes “The odds are good, but the goods are odd.” This is not true, there are some really great guys that I’ve meet from Tech. And there’s no doubt that the guys at Brickstore are easy on the eyes.

Well, actually I was shocked by how true the stereotypes about Tech students were when I first went on the campus, mostly because I personally knew the dozen or so non-stereotypical Tech kids and originally was like, “Oh, they’re just really smart at science over there, that’s all.” I witnessed some pretty tragic personal hygiene and fashion; HOWEVER, those kids will be millionaires one day and own all the fresh water, so it won’t matter than I know better than to wear a faded Dreamtheater t-shirt with stained cargo pants in public.

I totally forgot about Brickstore! I’m hoping the BF doesn’t read this post. He will prevent us from going to the hot spots (forgive the awful pun).
