This year, the Atlanta Pride Festival will be hosted in the Civic Center since Piedmont Park kicked everyone out due to the drought. Pride will also have a new date this year – the first weekend in July.
However, after seeing Saturday’s destruction, I think the desperate snow revelers were more damaging to the park’s ecosystem than the feet of thousands of suburbanites descending on Midtown for any of the six million festivals the park hosts between March and August. The snowman builders were just tearing chunks of soil up to use as fodder because there wasn’t enough clean snow. The sledders scraped some big muddy patches into the hills while they slid down what was essentially just wet grass (and not actually snow). Now I am realizing what a brilliant idea Coca-Cola Snow Mountain was after all.
