As some of you may know, one of Atlanta’s music backbones has broken. 99X will no longer have a presence on the Atlanta airwaves beginning January 25th when Q100 will be taking the spot at 99.7 FM. Now, 99X is claiming that their withdrawl from Atlanta’s FM dial is due to their desire to try and move completely into the online radio market. More than likely though, I would imagine that on account of deteriorating playlists and decreased interest in bad alternative rock has led to sponsors and listeners tuning to other stations such as Dave FM and Q100.
I must admit the end of 99X is a little bit bittersweet. Granted, I don’t think I have listened to 99.7 since I was a junior in high school, but I would still consider the station to be an integral part of my departure from Ace of Base into Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I mean, who didn’t listen to 99X at the height of alternative rock in the mid-90′s? I don’t know that 99X has done anything significant in several years making it little of a surprise that Q100 bought the station. About five years ago there were the free concerts in Centennial Park, and general association with festivals like Big Day Out and Lollapalooza, but what since then? Could they not afford to plaster their name on any attempts to keep their fans interested?
Well, at this point we should still just feel sorry for the middle schoolers who haven’t quite found their college radio niches yet. Good luck, younguns.

Me.
I don’t know the specific logistics but Q100 has been a partner station with 99X since it began (2000 i think?). So Q100 couldn’t have bought 99X which kind of makes the situation look worse.

I think that’s the saddest thing. I had the exact same sentiments about this in a conversation last night.
Also, in reference to your previous post, it’s funny how Lenny’s has a huge 99X poster prominently displaced.
My memories of regularly tuning in 99.7 go back to the Power99 days, before the ‘generation X’ facelift. Change is good, though. I won’t miss it.
Seriously. If not for 99x, I would never have become such a Collective Soul fan.
I know, they brainwashed 75% of metro Atlanta between the years 1993 and 1999 to unquestioningly love Collective Soul.
I used to have a hypercolor Power 99 T-shirt. I wish I still had it. I could probably sell it on eBay for millions. Even billions.
Good riddance. I stopped listening a couple of years ago after the rampant misogyny, racism, and homophobia of the morning crew just got to be too much.
