Dreaming of a white Halloween

3 Oct

Coca-Cola Snow Mountain at Stone Mountain shut down after one day because of the obvious problem that there is NO WATER in Atlanta, Thomas Wheatley (ladies, the carpet does match the drapes) at Fresh Loaf reports.

Also, I hate AJC.com for using the pun, “It’s snow joke!” in their coverage yesterday.

World’s largest granite formation was running a little commercial (or whatever they call it – slide show?) for this Snow Mountain before the laser show this summer and we wondered how in the world Coke planned to swing “200 tons of fresh snow daily” in light of our ravaging drought. Also, that’s just a stupid – and kind of gross – idea to begin with.

Update on the laser show if you haven’t been in ten years: it is still exactly the same, with maybe two “new” songs worked in. We observed a very literal rendition of U2′s 2001 hit “Beautiful Day” (have the laser animators no sense of metaphor?). The clientele is now perhaps slightly less trashy and slightly more suburban. There is also kind of an olde-tymey towne (a little Six Flags-esque) that you have to walk through to get to the laser lawn, where they sell funnel cakes and Coca-Cola products and Stone Mountain shot glasses.

The only reason to still go to the laser show is if you have some South African friends who seem hell-bent on visiting every embarrassing attraction metro Atlanta has to offer.

Here’s some vintage laser show footage to take you down memory lane, to a simpler time when you were too innocent to figure out what those couples from Stockbridge were doing under their army blankets during Elvis Presley’s “Dixie”.

Patriotism is definitely on the decline because people don’t get nearly as excited at the laser show by “Proud to be an American” as they used to. Everyone’s too fatigued from the war on terror, I guess.
